Morpeth Town Juniors 4 Westerhope Juniors 2

Morpeth kicked off their 2008-09 season with a comfortable win against league newcomers Westerhope. The scoreline could and perhaps should have been more convincing, but credit must be given to the Westerhope keeper who made a number of good saves.

Whilst Westerhope are a new team and had a few players missing on holiday, the nucleus of their side was drawn from former Ponteland players; a team that played in division 3 last season. It was clear they had one or two useful players, but Morpeth played very well in spells and were deserving of their victory.

Morpeth started on the offensive but were unable to make an early breakthrough whilst Westerhope threatened from time to time. Early chances were few (although Wilson came close to converting an opportunity), but Morpeth were playing some decent football. One move involved 6 players exchanging passes, starting with Whittle in the left back position and ending with Brown having a strike on goal.

Morpeth held the sway and the breakthrough came via a familiar source. Hughes broke clear in the inside right position and angled a low drive past the keeper for a fine goal. He nearly added a second moments later when in an almighty scramble, Hughes was unable to turn the ball over the line with the post and a posse of players all involved. It looked like Morpeth were going for a pushover try!

The lead didn't last more than a few minutes when Westerhope equalised via a fine long range strike. It came out of the blue and the dipping shot gave Taylor no chance as it found the bottom corner.

As half time approached, it looked like Morpeth would be level at the break, but in the last minute they snatched the lead. A Morpeth corner was floated across by Bryson and Rolt (playing the first half in an unfamiliar centre back role), planted a header past the keeper for a fine goal.

Numerous changes were made at half time and it showed early in the second period as Morpeth struggled to settle. Westerhope capitalised when a striker took advantage of hesitancy in Morpeth defence and poked a shot over Taylor and into the net for an equaliser.

That sparked Morpeth into action and for the remainder of the half, Morpeth could have scored a number of goals. In the end, they had to settle for two, the first following a flowing move. Tomlin was released on the left of the area and he beat the keeper at his near post.

Chances were coming. A swift break involving Hughes and Moore saw the latter pull back for Barwick, but the shot was scuffed. Another almighty scramble and again the ball somehow didn't cross the line, Creighton came close to turning in a ball after the keeper blocked an effort, whilst Moore's rising drive hit the bar, bounced down on the line, hit the bar again before coming back out. Linesman Wilson was unmoved despite claims for a goal!

Rolt, pushed back up front, was playing well and had opportunities whilst Hughes was always a threat, time and again denied by the Westerhope keeper. However, he grabbed his second goal when a fine rising drive from 12 yards flew into the net 10 minutes from time.

Westerhope had further chances, Wilson cleared one effort off the line whilst a striker volleyed over from 6 yards, but Morpeth repeatedly threatened on the break as the game drew to a close, Aldridge being prominent with some astute midfield passing.

So, a good work out with some promising play from Morpeth ahead of another friendly this Saturday which may prove a sterner test.

TEAM : Taylor, Dickinson, Whittle, Wilson, Rolt, Haxell, Moore, Barwick, Brown, Hughes, Bryson. SUBS : Aldridge, Smith, Tomlin, Kelly, Creighton, Thompson.

Morpeth Town Juniors 4 SAFC Foundation Panthers 4

Morpeth and SAFC shared 8 goals in a see-saw encounter at Swinneys Field. It was a good performance from Morpeth against a side that plays at Division 2 level in a Wearside based junior league.

With both teams having 18 players at their disposal, it was agreed that there would be four twenty minute quarters to give players as much time as possible on the pitch.

Morpeth started with their 4-3-3 formation and whilst SAFC held the early territorial advantage, they werent making great inroads against the Morpeth defence. Meanwhile back up keeper Foster dealt capably with anything that came his way.

Morpeth were guilty of surrendering possession cheaply when the ball was played forward, but when they did string some passes together, the move of the quarter nearly led to Rolt opening the scoring. Moore released Brown in midfield and his measured through ball put Rolt clear. Forced wide when rounding the keeper, his low drive beat the covering defender, but unfortunately for him, it just went wide of the far post.

SAFC took the lead from a free kick. Wilson handled 20 yards out. A SAFC midfielder sent in a cracking left footed free kick which smacked against the bar, the rebound being forced home by an alert striker.

The midfielder was one of two or three very tall and physically imposing opponents and his left foot power was to be demonstrated to great effect later in the game.

Both teams made changes for quarter 2, but it was Morpeth who took hold of the game netting three times. Rolt had already served notice when he struck a post, whilst Hughes was only denied by a superb last ditch block by a SAFC defender. But Rolt grabbed the equaliser Morpeth deserved when he turned home Moore's pull back.

Growing in confidence, Morpeth claimed the upper hand and struck twice in the closing minutes of the half. Firstly Bryson delivered a peach of a cross which Rolt deflected on for Hughes to finish, before Hughes added his second when the ball broke to him fortuitously six yards out after a strong run from Aldridge had split the defence.

Further changes were made by both sides and Morpeth switched to a 4-4-2 formation which didn't work. SAFC dominated the quarter with the aforementioned midfielder bossing the centre of the park. SAFC had had a couple of strikes on goal without joy before they grabbed a goal back. An attack led to an almighty goalmouth scramble with Smith eventually hacking clear. However, it broke to the SAFC midfielder who clattered a rising left footer past everyone ... some perhaps wisely taking evasive action!

He added his second when he swept in low and hard from 10 yards before completing his hat-trick from another free-kick that was still rising past the helpless Foster as it hit the net. For a youngster at U12 level, the player had an impressive strike.

Admirable though his strikes were, Morpeth were guilty of standing off and Barwick was left too isolated in central midfield.

Into the final quarter and reverting to 4-3-3 saw Morpeth regain a degree of control. Rolt was battling well up front, whilst the pace of Whittle and Hughes was causing problems. Aldridge sent through a superb ball, but the usually reliable Hughes scuffed his shot wide when clean through.

However, the striker's persistence led to the Morpeth equaliser. His determined and mazy run was half stopped as he closed in on goal, the ball spinning clear to the unmarked Whittle at the far post. Facing away from goal, Whittle cleverly back-heeled the ball into the corner from 2-3 yards.

Thereafter chances petered out and in the end an honourable draw was perhaps the best result. The game was played in a good spirit whilst both teams were able to give their full squads time on the pitch.

TEAM : Foster, Dickinson, Whittle, Wilson, Smith, Haxell, Moore, Aldridge, Brown, Hughes, Rolt. SUBS : Creighton, Bryson, Tomlin, Barwick, Winfield, Thompson, Kelly.
